Helping Findel Education calculate their carbon saving after implementing new packaging technology

Findel had 11 different sizes of cardboard box which they packed goods into, but after some analysis they discovered that on average the boxes were only 55% full when shipped out. As a result, they initiated a project to look at how products could be packed more effectively.

Solution

Findel integrated a ‘Right-Size’ packaging process into their production line, which means the dimension of each order is scanned into the box-making machine and a bespoke box is then assembled for the product to be packed into. This resulted in Findel Education using 45% less cardboard to send out orders, but they also wanted to understand the environmental savings of this new innovation.

Bespoke measurement metrics were also developed, which enabled the Group’s performance to be benchmarked and compared with similar format retailers.

Findel commissioned us to help them calculate their environmental savings due to our substantial experience in carbon footprinting and life cycle analysis.

We also completed additional in-bound transport analysis, discussing and evaluating alternative transport routes available to Findel.

Results

The report Findel were provided with allowed them to understand the carbon benefit associated with the ‘Right-Size’ project. They achieved a 151,000kg reduction in carbon emissions associated with their cardboard supply.

The additional analysis around alternative transport routes also informed them of the enviromental impacts allowing more informed decisions to be made.

Findel has since gone on to win the Chartered Insitute of Logistics and Transport (North West Region) Environmental Improvement Award for their innovative project including the carbon benefits calculated by us.
