The main aim of the collection scheme is to help reduce fuel use and carbon emissions. Collection vehicles would usually emit 298g of CO2 for every mile, whereas the bikes emit zero CO2.
In city centres, couriers often get held up in traffic, which causes delays and increases pollution in proportion to the distance travelled – especially with vehicle engines running while waiting in traffic queues.
Zedify couriers were already operating throughout Cambridge city centre, London, Hoxton and Waltham Forest, passing our battery customers – such as retail outlets and offices. They will collect waste batteries en route, rather than making one-way trips.
We also aim to include battery removal as an additional service for existing delivery customers. This may be expanded to include other small format wastes.
