Why is it important to put proper waste management and recycling into place?

It is important  businesses use credible suppliers when setting up commercial waste management and recycling systems. Failure to do so could be damaging to the environment and public health.

Businesses should hire reputable waste management companies for the collection and correct disposal of commercial waste, which should be sorted into recyclable, reusable and disposable materials.  Businesses must also ensure they obtain a fully auditable paper trail for all waste collections, ensuring their waste is dealt with correctly.

What regulations are there surrounding waste and recycling?

Since the introduction of the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations, all businesses are required to take reasonable steps to prevent and reduce waste, and where waste does arise a business must demonstrate that it has been dealt with in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

In addition to these Regulations there are over 80 pieces of waste legislation, including Duty of Care, in existence meaning it can be difficult for businesses to keep abreast of legal requirements. We have developed a Waste Manager Portal to help businesses keep up to date with waste legislation and ensure compliance. Visit our Waste Manager Portal page for further information.

Can a company be penalised for non-compliance?

If a business fails to comply with the requirements of any piece of waste legislation it is at risk of prosecution, heavy fines, negative press and damage to brand reputation.
