Front of Store Recycling: Sainsbury’s Supermarkets
The aim of this project was to conduct research into and improve the ‘front of store’ recycling performance of six Sainsbury’s stores across London
We created a unique partnership with Sainsbury’s and Christian Salvesen Plc, using a logistics company, rather than a typical waste management company to collect, record and transport the deposited recyclate. This is the first reported trial to have been run in this way.
Six trial and four control sites were selected within the greater London area, chosen to give a mix of recycling rates above and below 12% and a variety of different social economic areas.
A benchmarking study of original collection levels new rescape recycling facilities in six London stores a successful new collection technique that enabled the collection of multiple segregated material in a single vehicle optimised collection economics; reduced collection costs and environmental impact a trial of two different incentive schemes collection of over 2,000 tonnes of dry recyclate subsequent introduction of new recycling facilities at 36 Sainsbury’s stores.
The project significantly improved the facilities for front of store recycling and material collection increased levels of recycling at all six Sainsbury’s stores and enhanced front of store recycling experience for Sainsbury’s customers.
