Product/Service Carbon Footprint vs Organisational Carbon Footprint:

An organisational carbon footprint measures the greenhouse gas emissions from all of your business operations over a set period, while a product or service carbon footprint focuses on the emissions associated with a single product or service throughout its life cycle.

Whether you need to understand your company-wide impact or assess individual products, Valpak can provide expert guidance and tailored solutions to help you achieve your carbon goals.

FAQs

A robust carbon footprint analysis for businesses requires a detailed dataset covering both direct operations and wider supply chains. This typically includes:

  • Energy and fuel consumption data (electricity, gas, oil, etc.)
  • Transport and logistics information (fleet fuel, business travel, delivery miles)
  • Purchased goods and services (supplier data, materials, packaging, etc.)
  • Waste generated and disposal methods
  • Employee commuting or remote working activity
  • Product life cycle considerations (for product-level footprints)

Valpak’s team specialises in collecting and analysing this data, filling gaps where needed, and ensuring compliance with recognised standards such as ISO 14064 and the GHG Protocol.

Most businesses benefit from completing a business carbon footprint assessment annually. This aligns with corporate reporting cycles and helps track year-on-year progress toward sustainability goals. However, certain industries, such as construction, manufacturing, or product development, may require more frequent assessments to evaluate specific initiatives or supply chain alterations. Valpak works with businesses to set an appropriate reporting frequency, ensuring the results remain accurate, timely, and useful for decision-making.

Greenhouse gas emissions are grouped into three categories under the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the business, such as company vehicles or on-site fuel combustion.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy, electricity, steam, heating, or cooling consumed by the organisation.
  • Scope 3: All other indirect emissions across the value chain, including supplier activities, product use, employee travel, waste, and distribution. For most businesses, Scope 3 represents the largest share of emissions and can be the most challenging to measure.
