Did you know the EU’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will apply from August 2026?

This landmark regulation replaces the previous Directive and introduces stricter rules for packaging compliance across all EU member states. It’s a major shift toward circularity, traceability, and transparency, and it affects every business placing packaging on the EU market.

What is the PPWR?

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is a new EU law that:

  • Replaces the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive
  • Sets unified rules for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
  • Introduces stricter standards for recyclability, reuse, and labelling
  • Applies to manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers

It came into force on 11 February 2025 and will be applicable from 12 August 2026.

Who is affected?

If your business supplies packaging to the EU, you must:

  • Determine your role under PPWR (producer, supplier, etc.)
