Quantifying the environmental impacts of Polyplas’s extrusions for 13 different polymer types

Polyplas Extrusions Ltd is a leading manufacturer of plastic extrusions, supplying high-quality, precision-engineered products for a range of industries.

Recognising the importance of sustainability in today’s business landscape, Polyplas is dedicated to providing clear information about its environmental footprint.

As part of this commitment, Polyplas sought to better understand the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes and commissioned Valpak’s Consultancy team to conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on their plastic extrusions.

Polymers and Colours

With growing interest from current and potential clients in understanding the environmental performance of its products, Polyplas sought to quantify and effectively communicate the environmental impacts of its plastic extrusions across 13 different polymer types.

Plastics

To address this requirement, our Consultancy team conducted an LCA to establish the environmental impacts of manufacturing plastic extrusions for thirteen different plastic polymers at Polyplas’s site.

The system boundary of this LCA is cradle-to-gate i.e. the impacts are established to the point at which the finished extruded products are packaged and ready to leave Polyplas’s manufacturing site. The study quantifies the environmental impacts at three key life cycle stages:

  1. Materials: The upstream extraction and processing of raw materials (and packaging) used to manufacture the plastic extrusions.
  2. Transport: The transport of raw materials and packaging from supplier locations to Polyplas’s manufacturing site.
  3. Manufacturing: The energy, fuels, and water used and wastes generated by the processes to fabricate the extruded components at Polyplas’s manufacturing site.

Our LCA provided:

  • A quantification of the environmental impacts associated with manufacturing plastic extrusions for 13 different polymer types, using over 30 impact indicators.
  • Data-driven insights on the carbon footprint of the manufacture of plastic extrusions along with the identification of impact hotspots.
  • A baseline for measuring future improvements in environmental performance.
  • A method of communicating the environmental impacts of their products to current and potential clients.

Going forward

By working with Valpak’s Consultancy team, Polyplas now has a comprehensive understanding of the environmental impacts of its plastic extrusion processes. The insights gained from this LCA can be used to inform sustainable decisions for impact reduction strategies, supporting Polyplas’s commitment to sustainability.

The LCA work conducted by Valpak’s consultants is truly impressive and greatly appreciated. The valuable insights we’ve gained will significantly enhance our commercial offering to customers.
