Driving sustainability through Digital Product Passports

In collaboration with Fabacus and Buyerdock

Digital Product Passports are coming, and preparation needs to start now.

Under the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), mandatory requirements begin rolling out from 2026, with businesses expected to have data, systems, and processes ready well before then.

FAQs

A Digital Product Passport, or DPP, is a digital identity for a product that contains data about its lifecycle. It brings together information on materials, origin, sustainability characteristics, repairability, recyclability, and regulatory compliance. Exact data requirements will be defined through secondary legislation.

Unlike a static label, a DPP acts as a living digital record that can be updated over time as a product moves through use, reuse, and end of life.

DPPs are a core element of the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan and sit within the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Their purpose is to improve transparency, enable circular business models, and support enforcement of sustainability and product compliance requirements across supply chains.

Digital Product Passports will be introduced in phases, starting with priority product groups and expanding over time.

  • 2025: Preparation and pilot phases begin for some product categories. Industry specific requirements published
  • 2026 to 2027: First mandatory DPPs required for product groups such as batteries
  • 2027 to 2029: Expansion to textiles and consumer electronics
  • 2028 to 2030: Further rollout across additional product categories, including construction materials and furniture
  • From 2030 onwards: Broad implementation across most products placed on the EU market

Any business supplying products to the EU will be affected, regardless of where they are based.

Businesses should prepare early to avoid disruption and reduce compliance risk. Key actions include understanding what information must be collected, how it will be maintained, and how it will be made accessible.

This typically includes data on:

  • Product composition and materials
  • Sustainability and performance metrics
  • Care, repair, and disposal information
  • Compliance documentation and declarations

Digital Product Passports are accessed via technologies such as 2D barcodes, NFC tags, or RFID chips.

Different users will access different information:

  • Consumers see care, repair, and sustainability information
  • Businesses access sourcing and supply chain data
  • Regulators view compliance, customs, and enforcement data
