Amcor, a global leader in developing and producing responsible packaging solutions, has set a long-term goal to send zero waste to landfills, across its operations. As part of this commitment, the company’s Steinfeld facility in Germany has achieved Valpak’s Zero Waste to Landfill certification, marking a key milestone in their sustainability journey.
The Amcor Steinfeld site produces a range of packaging films for industrial applications. The site also recycles PE-based films and plastic packaging waste into recycled material that is then used to manufacture new products, such as bags and pallet stretch hoods.
As part of its continuous improvement initiatives, the Steinfeld site wanted to enhance its waste management strategies. By focusing on waste reduction and maximising recycling efficiencies, the facility has taken important steps to reduce its environmental footprint and contribute to a circular economy.
Seeking independent verification, Amcor Steinfeld pursued Zero Waste to Landfill certification, reinforcing its commitment to responsible business practices and corporate social responsibility.
The Steinfeld site commissioned our Zero Waste to Landfill team to support its certification process. Ahead of our initial audit, they conducted a thorough waste review, gathering data and evidence to ensure a smooth and efficient process. Based on audit findings, we provided recommendations to improve waste segregation and recycling efforts.
Despite challenges such as space constraints and sourcing appropriate recycling outlets, the site made good progress. Steinfeld already had its own recycling capabilities, including commercial and industrial PE film recycling, which processes mostly post-consumer recycled (PCR) waste, along with smaller quantities of post-industrial recycled (PIR) material. The site operates two recycling lines with an annual capacity of 11kt, employing standard washing and regranulation as well as premium washing (deinking and extraction) to produce a high-quality recycled material.
As part of its ongoing improvements, Steinfeld implemented several key measures:

Through its commitment to achieving Zero Waste to Landfill status, Amcor Steinfeld demonstrates a proactive approach to improved sustainability, setting a strong industry example.
Valpak’s Zero Waste to Landfill Certification process has been invaluable for our Amcor Steinfeld site. The high standards of transparency and self-assessment provided us with a deeper understanding of waste management, influencing our decision to pursue certification. The audit was particularly insightful, offering valuable external perspectives and prompting us to refine our waste strategies.
