Horizon Scanning

Keep up to date with environmental legislation and discover opportunities for reducing your business's environmental footprint in other countries

If your business operates in international markets it can be difficult to keep up to date with environmental legislation, or to find opportunities to reduce its environmental footprint within each country.

Greater consumer and business awareness of the importance of sustainability, coupled with an increasing trend in countries implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation, means there has never been a more important time to ensure your business is legally compliant, or to go further and identify opportunities to become a sustainability pioneer.

Researching international environmental legislation can deliver lots of benefits, but it can also be technically challenging and time consuming. Our team of expert researchers and consultants have extensive knowledge and experience in horizon scanning, which means we can ease the burden, allowing you to concentrate on your core business.

Whether your goal is to identify future opportunities within new international markets or prepare for and mitigate risks within an evolving legislative landscape, Valpak can help by systematically assessing the information available.

This service is supported by our International Compliance team, which helps organisations to comply with their international environmental commitments in terms of packaging, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), batteries, textiles and furniture.

Valpak’s track record

Our team has been involved in the following projects:

  • Recycled Content

We identified legislation on the use of recycled materials for a consumer products supplier within their product range to help them develop strategies to meet legal requirements, optimise environmental opportunities and mitigate the impact of environmental regulations. The project focussed on Europe and the USA.

  • Food Contact Regulations / Deposit Return Systems (DRS)

The objective of this project was to provide the current and future legislative landscape relating to packaging within 19 countries across the Asia Pacific region and the Middle East for a fast-food restaurant. Voluntary and mandatory initiatives were considered, along with food contact regulations and deposit return systems (DRS) for beverage packaging.

  • Producer Responsibility Systems for the pharmaceutical industry

This work required supporting one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies by advising them of its obligations in countries of operations within the EU, Asia / Oceania and the Americas in terms of:

    • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
    • Medicine Take Back Schemes
  • Packaging Compliance (Current and Future)

Valpak conducted research for a large lubricant manufacturer to identify current and future legislation relating to packaging compliance across Europe, Asia and the US in order to identify the most stringent regimes, with a particular focus on plastics. The countries covered include all 28 EU Member States, Norway, China, India, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, the US, and Canada.

Whether it’s EPR for textiles, food contact regulations or new packaging regulations, we find out what’s in place, and what’s around the corner.
