ARC Building Solutions

Driving competitiveness with Environmental Product Declarations

ARC Building Solutions is a specialist manufacturer of cavity fire barriers and closures for the construction sector. Their products play a vital role in controlling the spread of smoke and fire within building envelopes. With demand growing for credible environmental performance data, Arc recognise that Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are becoming essential for staying competitive, particularly in tendering and specification.

The construction industry is increasingly prioritising transparency and sustainability, driven by green building certifications, public procurement, emerging regulations and growing customer expectations. While Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are not yet mandatory in the UK, their absence could limit market opportunities.

ARC Building Solutions faced several challenges:

  • A complex portfolio of over 90 product variants across two ranges
  • Limited internal capacity and specialist Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) expertise
  • Need for access to recognised databases, software, and standards to ensure credible results

Their objectives were to:

  • Develop robust, verified EPDs for two key product ranges:
    • Cavity stop sock range for masonry walls
    • Timber cavity barriers for timber frame walls
  • Deliver to their stakeholders environmental performance data for their two product ranges aligned with industry standards
  • Meet customer and market expectations

Valpak provided end-to-end LCA and EPD support:

  • Data collection & validation: Defined the LCA scope in line with Arc’s objectives, identified the inventory data required from Arc for the study and analysed it for accuracy and completeness.
  • LCA methodology and modelling: Delivered LCAs with the system boundary cradle-to-gate with options, modules C1–C4, module D, aligned with industry standards ISO 14040/44, EN 15804 and following the product category rules for sustainability of construction products.
  • Reporting and EPD development: Prepared detailed LCA reports and developed Environmental Product Declarations tailored to Arc’s requirements and following industry standards ISO14025 and EN15804.
  • Verification and publication: Support with independent third-party verification and EPD publishing on the EPD Program Operator’s portal.
