DEFRA have issued a short consultation asking for views on whether to amend the Government Guidance Notes on the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 to provide clarity on the definition of what constitutes a “portable” battery. DEFRA propose to amend the guidance to introduce a single weight threshold of 4 kg so that any battery weighing below this will be considered to be able to be “hand-carried” and thus portable.
The consultation is asking for views on this proposed change and also seeking views on the impact of a 3 kg limit. It is not clear when the results of the consultation are likely to come into effect, although we anticipate this may occur midway through 2015. Valpak have prepared a response to this consultation which can be found here. The consultation closes on 22 February 2015.
A summary of this consultation can be here and the full consultation documentation can be found here.
