Since 1994, European legislation has placed the responsibility for the recovery and recycling of packaging waste on those who handle packaging at any stage of the supply chain. This has been implemented into national legislation by member states, in response to EC Directive 94/62/EC 1994 on packaging and packaging waste, a harmonising Directive to be implemented into national law, that would set recovery and recycling targets for Member States. The Directive is aimed at preventing the production of packaging waste by: reduction; reuse; recycling and other forms of recovery.
The Green Dot® is a highly recognised symbol in many European countries, showing a commitment from the companies adopting the emblem to this piece of legislation. Packaging recovery organisations have been set up pan-Europe in accordance with the principles contained in the European Directive on packaging waste, as transcribed into its national law.
This section aims to bring you a snap shot of the Green Dot® in Europe and EU succession countries and is by no means conclusive. We aim to bring you useful resources and useful links to other European compliance schemes who may use the Green Dot®.
