The UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations were introduced in 2007 with the aim of reducing the amount of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) ending up in landfill.

The WEEE Regulations require producers and distributors to finance the collection, treatment and recycling or reuse of this fast growing and problematic waste stream.

Who is Affected?

WEEE Who Is Affected
You have a WEEE obligation if any of the following points apply to you:
True Re-brand, with your own brand, EEE that was manufactured by another company True Manufacture electrical or electronic equipment (EEE) under your own brand
True Import EEE into the UK True Sell EEE to household consumers
If you are still unsure as to whether or not your business is obligated under the WEEE Regulations please call one of our technical advisors on 03450 682 572
Find out if you are also affected by the RoHS Regulations.

What Do You Need to Do?

Producers that place more than 5 tonnes of EEE onto the UK market must:

  • Join a WEEE compliance scheme within 28 days of placing EEE onto the UK market
  • Complete data submissions detailing the amount of EEE placed onto the UK market
  • Ensure EEE is marked with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol and a producer identification mark e.g. brand name
  • Finance the cost of the collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of WEEE

Producers that place 5 tonnes or less of EEE onto the UK market must:

  • Register directly with the Environment Agency
  • Complete an annual data submission detailing the amount of EEE placed onto the UK market
  • Ensure EEE is marked with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol and a producer identification mark e.g. brand name

Distributors must provide information to consumers about their role in recycling, the environmental impacts of hazardous substances found in WEEE, the importance of separating WEEE from other waste streams and the meaning of the 'crossed out wheeled bin symbol'.  In addition to this distributors must also:

  • Offer in-store take back on a one-for-one like-for-like basis for all types of EEE that they sell

  • OR

  • Join the Distributor Take back Scheme (DTS) and make a financial contribution which will be used to help set up WEEE collection facilities throughout the UK

How Much Does it Cost?

There are 3 sets of fees that you will need to pay in order to become compliant with the regulations:

  1. Agency fees – everyone has to pay a set environment agency registration fee each year
  2. Annual Membership fee – this covers our administration costs of checking and verifying your data
  3. Evidence fee – this is the cost of procuring recycling evidence notes needed to meet your obligation (not applicable for producers that place less than 5 tonnes of EEE onto the UK market)
