Valpak partners with Marks and Spencer on environmental challenges

by Valpak Limited | May 20, 2014
Next month, Valpak will be presenting alongside Marks and Spencer at the British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) International Retailing 2014 Conference to highlight some of the environmental challenges that may face UK companies looking to expand trading operations to overseas markets.

The event, held on 5 June 2014, will bring together retailers from various sectors and aims to provide practical strategies and support for global growth plans; one key aspect of which is ensuring compliance with overseas environmental compliance regulations.

The European Union (EU) Producer Responsibility Directives for waste packaging, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and waste batteries were respectively introduced from 1994 onwards, and place an obligation for producers of waste to report and pay for goods which they place on the market in each EU member state. These regulations have since been adopted by some non EU countries and continue to be an area of constant development. They often have no minimum thresholds and obligate:

  • Manufacturers
  • Re-branders
  • Retailers
  • Distributors
  • Importers
  • Internet retailers

In today’s market it is important for big brand names, such as Marks and Spencer, to ensure compliance with Producer Responsibility Regulations so that the recycling of waste is financed and that consumers are aware of the recycling and collection options available to them in each country.
