The batteries compliance system works on a market share basis, with each obligated manufacturer ('producer') funding battery recycling costs related to their share of the market.
Some retailers ('distributors') also have a role to play. In order to meet yearly battery collection targets, which are set by the Government, 'distributors' that sell over 32kg of batteries per year must offer to take back waste batteries in store.
