Not as Expensive as You Might Think...
Compliance costs vary depending on the activities an obligated organisation carries out within the packaging chain. Packaging recycling levies, which fluctuate due to changes in demand for materials and recycling activity levels, are charged to cover the costs of collecting and reprocessing your share of packaging. This is done via the purchase of Packaging Waste Recovery Notes (PRNs).
All packaging producers pay a set annual registration fee which goes direct to the relevant environment agency (EA, SEPA or NIEA). If you submit your data via a packaging compliance scheme the Great Britain agency fee is £564 and the Northern Ireland agency fee is £776. Organisations that opt to submit their data directly to the Environment Agency pay a higher registration fee.
In addition, our membership fee covers the administration costs of running the packaging compliance scheme and service costs. Auditing, data checking and PRN purchase are just some of the activities covered by our membership fee.
