If you are an obligated 'producer' of batteries, you need to pay your share towards the costs of recycling waste batteries by joining a producer compliance scheme like Valpak, or by registering directly with the appropriate agency.
Large obligated battery producers (i.e. those that place over 1 tonne of portable batteries onto the UK market each year) are required to register, with the appropriate agency, through a battery producer compliance scheme. This should be done within 28 days of the first date on which they place batteries onto the UK market.
Large battery 'producers' must provide quarterly sales information (weight and chemistry category) to their compliance scheme. All 'producers' must mark their batteries with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol.
Please note that if you import electrical goods that contain batteries for sale in the UK, you will also have an obligation under the Waste Batteries Regulations. Please complete our online enquiry form, or call 08450 682 572 for more information.
If you are a small batteries 'producer' (i.e. you place 1 tonne or less of portable batteries onto the UK market each year) you must register directly with the appropriate agency. There is an annual registration charge of £30 for small 'producers'. Data should be submitted yearly, which differs to large 'producer' requirements. Please refer to the Environment Agency website: www.environment-agency.gov.uk for further information.
All 'producers' must mark their batteries with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol.
If you ‘distribute’ (or retail) more than 32kg of batteries per year you have to make sure that consumers can recycle their batteries by returning them to you 'in store'. Please complete our online enquiry form, or call 08450 682 572 to find out more about Valpak’s battery collection network.
Please note that you can have both 'producer' and 'seller' obligations under the Waste Batteries Regulations.
